Madam,

I find it an intolerable assault on truth that the bishop of Menevia and his diocesan trustees intend to rebuild the Welsh Martyrs church at Penparcau on the premise that the St Winefride’s church building is too dangerous for further use when there is ample evidence available to the contrary.

Unfortunately, some people have chosen to believe that the building is “not fit for purpose” purely on the basis of their own personal predilections, wishes, and intentions rather than of any strictly objective considerations, and it is blind, persistent faith in this false belief that has led to the present situation.

I have no doubt that any objectively minded person visiting this now-closed building would witness not a crumbling ruin but a basically solid old building in need of some refurbishment and repair.

The idea of rebuilding the jerry-built, outlying semi-ruin of Welsh Martyrs church at Penparcau with a loan of some £360,000 foisted on the parish, when we already have a fine, centrally located old building which is still withstanding the test of time after 141 years, proclaims its own absurd folly and will hardly redound to the bishop’s glory as a wise and caring pastor of his flock. Inadequate seating capacity and parking space, inaccessibility for many, unsecured funds, etc, etc.

There is much disillusionment among the public, needless to say, with the ways of politicians. Having witnessed the treatment of our parish by the Menevia diocese over the years, however, I feel more kindly towards politicians than previously.

Yours etc,

Iestyn Daniel,

Erw Goch,
