ELIN Jones AM will be “keeping a close eye” on the Welsh Government after it said much-anticipated improvements to the A44 would be completed this winter.
The intervention comes after the Cambrian News reported in October that traffic lights, intended to be temporary, had once again become a permanent feature of the A44 at Pantmawr, approximately four miles west of Llangurig.
The lights returned just months after the Welsh Government completed works to replace damaged vehicle barriers and repair the supporting embankment in spring last year, following a crash more than two years earlier in November 2013.
Motorists have complained of long delays at the lights, which one Aberystwyth resident said had been there for “at least” six months, and further temporary lights have been stationed along the stretch of road, dubbed the most dangerous in Wales, in recent weeks.
After Miss Jones wrote to the Welsh Cabinet secretary for economy and transport, Ken Skates AM, seeking answers on why the works had not been completed yet, Mr Skates said in a letter to Miss Jones that the Trunk Road Agent is actively monitoring the site to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum and expected work to be undertaken this winter.
Ms Jones warned Mr Skates against “sticking plaster” improvements on the road, and said she would be taking an active interest in the matter.
