AM Elin Jones has spoken out in the National Assembly on behalf of the communities of Llanfihangel y Creuddyn and Trawscoed, where anger is building over the lack of superfast broadband.

The area has long been a blackspot for poor internet connectivity, however, the community received assurances from the director of BT Wales last year that it would be included in the Superfast Cymru programme, which aims to connect 96 per cent of premises in Wales to fast fibre broadband by the middle of 2016.

Llanfihangel was due to be connected by September this year.

In recent weeks, however, many residents have received information that the area is now not within the scope of the Superfast plan.

Miss Jones said: “I have attended several meetings in the Llanfihangel and Trawscoed area with residents who are anxious to secure improved broadband, which is essential for many people who work from home, for leisure and tourism, and also for farmers to access online forms.

“These communities broke the record for the highest November temperature, but they have a long history of low internet speeds.

“They’re just the kind of places where the Superfast Cymru programme should be making a real difference. Residents were led to believe that better broadband was on its way.

“It can’t be right that there’s now uncertainty again. Understandably, people in Llanfihangel and the surrounding area feel they have been misled."
