ANGRY parents have hit out after the paddling pool on Aberystwyth’s promenade was closed off yet again, as the town basked in a heatwave over the weekend.
It is understood that a section of the surface of the pool has split and peeled, leaving the pool too “dangerous” to use.
Aberystwyth councillor Ceredig Davies said that, while there are “underlying problems” with the pool, it is an important part of the promenade and needs to be open “at the earliest opportunity”.
The pool should be open on weekends in June and July and all through the school summer holidays - but this has often not been the case in recent years.
On social media, angry parents called the closure a “disgrace”, with some saying their weekend plans were “ruined”.
On Facebook, residents said there was “nothing for kids” in Aberystwyth already and “now the paddling pool is shut”.
One parent said there were going to be “a lot of disappointed kids” over the weekend. Others blamed the council and contractors for the continuing closures, and said that tourism will suffer if the problems with the pool aren’t resolved.
Cllr Davies told the Cambrian News: “There are some underlying problems with the base of the pool, problems possibly associated with storms that we have experienced over recent years.
“Remedial work was carried out in time for a Whitsun opening but, unfortunately, on Saturday the fibreglass repair had split making the pool dangerous for young paddlers.”
Ceredigion council could not confirm to the Cambrian News whether the pool would be open for the summer.
