An online review of Fairbourne which describes the village as a “grief hole” has angered residents.
The critique was posted on the website iLiveHere, which provides a platform for people to criticise UK cities, towns and villages.
The review, which attracted media coverage, refers to Fairbourne as a “sorrowful abyss of hyper-misery”, amongst a string of other criticisms.
Locals are understandably angry about the post, with one resident saying it was full of errors and poorly written.
Graham Hogg, who has close ties with the village and is a campaigner for its future and the welfare of its residents, said: “I would not describe this as a review. A review would contain some facts and analysis.
“This is sadly typical of so much stuff on the internet and is only noteworthy because of the level of unjustified abuse and offence towards the people of Fairbourne.
He added: “I can appreciate edgy humour and comedy that challenges us and we all need to be prepared to laugh at ourselves. However, there is nothing clever here, just over-the-top abuse.”
Mr Hogg added: “Fairbourne and its community don’t need to defend themselves against this meaningless, childish abuse.
“I know that Fairbourne has a warm and vibrant community spirit with some great residents, businesses and attractions ready to welcome any visitors.”
