NETWORK Rail has apologised for carrying out work on Dyffryn Ardudwy Railway Station that made it difficult for disabled people and mums with pushchairs to get to and from the platform.

Complaining about a lack of consultation, Cllr Eryl Jones-Williams said he had received complaints that the work had made it practically impossible for wheelchair users to use a new gate that had been installed because it was heavy.

He added that the gate did not open fully and when traffic was crossing the railway, the open gate was totally blocking the entrance.

Cllr Eryl Jones-Williams’ wife Maureen, an MS sufferer and wheelchair user said that she would have to have someone with her to open the gates because the gates were on a slope.

Samuel Hadley for Network Rail said: “Although we delivered this work to make the railway safer, we were already aware that the new access gate may have made it more difficult for wheelchair users to access the platform and we are very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused passengers. We are currently exploring options to permanently solve this issue and improve access for all station users."
