Aberystwyth Cats Protection is appealing for people to foster abandoned cats and kittens after saying the need has become “urgent”.

Ann Fitzgerald of Aberystwyth Cats Protection said that in the nearly 20 years since the group was formed “there have never been such a large number of cats and kittens needing to be taken into care”.

“There is an urgent need of fosterers to take care of them until permanent homes can be found,” she said.

“Most of these beautiful, needy animals have come from owners who are unable to keep the cats they have loved and cared for over the years either through having to move house or because of ill health,” Ann said.

“Others however have been turned out and abandoned once the appealing kitten stage has been reached.”

Ann said that there is now “a long waiting list” for cats and kittens needing homes, and that the group need more volunteers who can look after a cat or kittens until they can be found permanent homes.

“Cats Protection supply everything for the fosterer from major items like food and litter, as well as baskets, blankets, rubber gloves, aprons, scratch posts and toys for the cats,” Ann said.

“Anyone who has a spare room for a cat, or space in the garden for a heated cat chalet supplied by Cats Protection, can be a fosterer."
