A Ceredigion artist and writer has released a beautiful book for children.
Dixey Brooks, who lives near Lampeter, has written and illustrated Coco and the Bear for children aged four and 10 years.
Dixey describes the book as a magical adventure story about three cousins.
Otto, Ava and Obie are almost six. Armed with their own superpower, they valiantly set off through the woods to rescue Otto’s intrepid little sister Coco, who has disappeared in the forest leaving only her small footprint next to a very large paw print.
“On their quest they see a hare, a large river and a wise owl,” said Dixey. “It is an inspiring tale of courage and loyalty, about children in their element, trusting their place in the wild and the natural talents that life has gifted them.”
Dixey wrote the story and created 45 illustrations.
“The story was inspired by four of my grandchildren, and the woods where I live,” Dixey explained.
“Having told stories to children for years and years, I decided it was time to write and illustrate one. I didn’t have far to look for inspiration. One day I heard my five-year-old grandson Otto say about his fearless little sister, ‘Oh no, where is Coco? She might be in trouble! I have to rescue her!’ So the idea for Coco and the Bears came to me.
“It is a story of courage, love and loyalty, about facing and overcoming challenges, kinship with wilderness, and the innate gifts of every child.
“Small children can follow every step of the story through the illustrations, and older children can engage with the plot and read along.”
Dixey plans to get the book translated into Welsh and also Italian.
“I have roots in Italy,” said Dixey.
“I would also like to do an audio version of the book.
“I am currently working on the sequel to the book, Coco and the Dolphins.”
