ABERYSTWYTH Arts Centre did not follow the rules in place to show the unsubtitled version of a Welsh-language film set in the town, the Cambrian News can reveal.

We reported last month how the subtitled and unsubtitled versions of The Library Suicides (Y Llyfrgell) had different ratings for their showings at the arts centre at the start of October.

The arts centre said that the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) had not rated the unsubtitled version, so it listed the film, shot in The National Library of Wales and featured at several worldwide film festivals, as an 18.

The subtitled version was rated by the BBFC as a 15.

The BBFC and Ceredigion council told the Cambrian News that a cinema showing any film not rated by the board should apply for permission from the local authority’s licensing team.

Ceredigion council said that, despite not following the rules, the arts centre had made a “sound decision” to rate the film as an 18.
