THERE is no such thing as a typical day, but that’s what I love about my job as health visitor team leader for Flying Start in Ceredigion, as every day is different, writes Ian Bell, Flying Start health visitor team leader.
I’ve always worked in caring roles and since I qualified as a health visitor I have enjoyed working with children and families. I’ve been a health visitor with Flying Start in Penparcau since 2007, and was happily promoted to team leader in September 2015.
For the majority of the time I’m based at Llwyn yr Eos primary school in Penparcau, near Aberystwyth, but can travel the width and breadth of Ceredigion in a week.
Each day can involve being part of a range of projects and initiatives, and might include meeting families as a health visitor, holding a meeting with Flying Start team members, working in the family centres and helping to run baby massage sessions!
I arrived in Wales from Yorkshire in 1995, and from then I’ve worked for Hywel Dda University Health Board in various roles, with Ceredigion County Council as a member of the Disabled Children’s Team and a Specialist Health Visitor and with the Children and Families Team. My role with Flying Start is described as integrated and multi-agency, which means that I work closely with colleagues in Hywel Dda University Health Board and with Ceredigion County Council, as well as voluntary agencies.
