Bowling club
AUGUST, despite variable weather conditions and the rabbit population’s best efforts, was another successful month. On 13 August, the club played for the Ron Barnard Cup. David Evans, the men’s captain, was the winner, and Pam Payton, the club treasurer, was runner up. On 16 August, a perfect summer’s day for bowling, the team visited Fairbourne for the annual local derby. The hosts gained a well deserved victory on this occasion, and afterwards, Barmouth team enjoyed a super buffet meal prepared by the Fairbourne ladies. On Wednesday, 17 August, the Dolgellau Rotary Club enjoyed the use of the green for a fun evening. The return match with Fairbourne Bowling Club was held with Barmouth once again defeated by the better side, and the Challenge Shield will now join Fairbourne club’s collection of trophies across the River Mawddach.The mixed doubles contest on 27 August was won by Ron Rees, who now has a prolific amount of trophies and challenges to his name over his many years of membership.His doubles partner on this oc-casion was Pauline Roberts, the ladies’ captain.
Open day
THE Freemasons will be hold-ing an open day on Saturday, 17 September.The whole building in Water Street will be open to the public in an effort to provide a more informed view of what Masonry is and what it has to offer to men and women in the 21st century.There will be Brethren on hand to explain what membership entails and what the order does in terms of raising funds from among members to run the grand charities and to fund the Royal College for Surgeons.The building will be open to everyone from 11am till 4pm.
Autumn music
ON Friday, 9 September, the Summer Strings Serenade by Volante Strings Orchestra will be held at Dragon Theatre.The performance will begin at 8pm and include Vivaldi’s String Concerto in D minor, Thomas’ The Silence of Aberffraw, Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, Rutter’s Suite for Strings, Leroy Anderson’s Fiddle-Faddle, Eric Coates’ Calling all Workers and three short works for cello and strings featuring Frank Bridge, Pablo Casals and Corinne Frost.On Saturday there will be a change of pace with a jazz night starting at 8pm. Both events will be in the Arts Room.
