EXCITEMENT is building for Barmouth Bridge’s firework and laser spectacular.
On 14-15 October the seaside town will be awash with residents and visitors celebrating the iconic bridge’s 150th anniversary.
On Saturday night, a themed laser and firework extravaganza centred on the harbour and bridge will serve as the weekend’s highlight.
A spokesperson for the town council, which is organising the event, said: “The structure is a truly outstanding example of 19th century engineering and provides a platform to enable stunning views from the viaduct itself while at the same time being an integral part of the beautiful scene framed by the Cader Idris mountain range and underlined by the Mawddach estuary.
“It is an anniversary to be celebrated, and we hope that residents and visitors from far and wide will take part in the events held over the weekend.
“Whether you are walking the Wales Coastal Path or following in the footsteps of Julia Bradbury and her Railway Walks, you will enjoy acquainting yourself with the beautiful Mawddach Estuary.”
The 700-metre bridge opened on 10 October 1867, when it originally included a drawbridge section at its north end for tall ships to pass, though this was later replaced by the current swing bridge section.
The bridge is a Grade II* listed structure, and is one of the longest timber viaducts still in regular use in Britain.
There will also be exhibitions, films, treasure hunts and an array of other festivities taking place throughout the town.
