VOLUNTEER festive beach cleaners collected a “staggering” amount of plastic from an Aberystwyth beach at the weekend.
Aberystwyth Beach Buddies’ annual Bad Christmas Jumper Beach Clean was attended by around 25 volunteers, who helped clear Tan y Bwlch Beach of litter on Saturday.
Among the items collected were two lobster cages, two plastic fish containers, “kilograms and kilograms” of plastic, 18 big bags full of rope and bottles, and even a can of insecticide from foreign shores.
Organiser Alan Cookson said: “Thank you Rob, Steve, Yvonne, Carter, Meadow, Elsa, Anna, Ozzy, Kate, Paul, Becky, Rose, Peter, Chris, Paul, Sian, Shrewsbury, and everyone else whose name I missed or maybe heard but can’t quite remember.
“The enthusiasm to wear reindeer ears, hats, tinsel and some seriously ‘bad taste’ jumpers was a joy to witness, be around and be apart of.
“We have a staggering 14 beach-cleans scheduled for 2018, details of which can be found on the Aberystwyth Beach Buddies Facebook page.
“The idea is that people can hopefully support the cleans they can make throughout the year with a proper calendar."
