VOLUNTEER beach cleaners will hit Aberystwyth’s busiest beach on Friday in an attempt to engage schoolchildren as they break up for summer holidays.

Surfers Against Sewage, in conjunction with Aberystwyth Beach Buddies, are inviting people to join them on the ‘Schools out for Summer’ clean at Aberystwyth North Beach from 4pm on Friday, 21 July.

Speaking to the Cambrian News this week, SAS Borth representative Alan Cookson said it was a chance to engage young people on what is historically one of the busiest — and messiest — times for beaches in the county.

Mr Cookson said: “The general idea is to do a lot of beach cleans when the beaches are rammed to create awareness of the mess created.

“One of the problems is that the sea comes all the way up and takes the litter away. This makes the beach look clean but once it is in the sea, we believe most of it ends up at Borth or Clarach on the next high tide.

“Most people who litter are within a certain age bracket — they are generally male between the age of 15 and 25.

“At the moment, when we consider we as a civilisation are fighting against global warming, it is now considered that the marine litter crisis is equally as big a threat as global warming.

“The idea is that if we can get kids on board now, they won’t have to solve the problem further down the line.”
