PLANS are afoot to reopen a once-thriving pub on the Llyn Peninsula as a community hub.

On Monday evening, a crowd of enthusiastic locals amassed at a public meeting to decide upon the future of The Sportsman pub in Nefyn.

The once popular pub closed its doors in 2009 and has remained empty ever since, a sad reminder of the town’s formerly bustling High Street.

In a bid to get Nefyn “up and running again” Bleddyn Evans and his wife Bethan, are spearheading a campaign to reopen The Sportsman as a community venture, possibly including some accommodation in the future.

The Evans family, who have raised thousands of pounds for charity following the tragic death of their 20-month-old son Efan in 2012, are well known in the community and are looking to form a committee to decide upon the future of the old drinking establishment.

The building is currently listed for sale for £160,000 but Bleddyn is hoping that figure is negotiable.

“The building has been empty for about nine years and it needs a lot of work doing to it,” he told the Cambrian News.

“At the moment, we just wanted to hold a public meeting to see if there was interest in reopening The Sportsman as a community hub.

“Over 80 people attended and there were lots of positive discussions.”
