A major exhibition of the work of Blaenau Ffestiniog sculptor and land artist David Nash, opens at National Museum Cardiff on 3 May.
David Nash: Sculpture Through the Seasons will be the largest and most ambitious exhibition of Nash’s work ever presented in Wales.
The exhibition will mark the 50th anniversary of the artist living and working in Capel Rhiw – a former Methodist chapel in Blaenau Ffestiniog.
Capel Rhiw has been at the centre of Nash’s life and work for over half a century, doubling as home and studio. He has developed the space into an extraordinary sculptural installation in which he gathers and arranges his ‘congregation’ or ‘family’ of sculptures.
Featuring key sculptures from the late 1960s to the present day, the exhibition explores the different ways the artist has cut, carved and manipulated wood to produce work that crosses abstraction and figuration, yet always retains reference to the forms of the original tree and the unique qualities of the chosen material.
This exhibition is accompanied by the major publication David Nash: 200 Seasons at Capel Rhiw published by Amgueddfa Cymru.
The exhibition has been developed in partnership with Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne and takes place at Towner from 28 September till 2 February, 2020. It’s supported by the Colwinston Charitable Trust and the Henry Moore Foundation.
