Oh dear, Dwyfor Meirionnydd seems saddled with a Tory Senedd candidate squarely in the Boris Johnson mould of ignoring the truly parlous nature of our present condition and looking prematurely to the blue skies that are doubtless coming, but still, sadly, are some way off.
For our present concern should be that the new strain of virus is up to 70 per cent more infectious than the strain that has plagued us this last year.
The increased ease of getting infected in all settings surely means that for those unable, by circumstances, to stay at home, we should raise the safe distance rule from two metres to 3.5metres, and that mask wearing should be compulsory even in the open air.
Certainly let Charlie Evans(‘Outdoor meetings should be the first rule relaxed’, Letters, 13 January) look forward to better times. But let us not lose sight of our present difficulties - a highly infectious vicious virus and a Westminster Tory government that fails to mitigate its effects on the poor and gives its rich friends lucrative contracts that fail to deliver life-saving track and trace.
