Madam,

Until my wife Sonia was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about 18 months ago I had no idea that the Enlli ward existed in Bronglais Hospital. When it became necessary for Sonia to be admitted to the hospital I was very apprehensive and concerned as to how she would react to being taken into the hospital.

I needn’t have worried as the staff on the ward made Sonia very welcome and took good care of her on her admission. She is now in the best possible place and seems to be as reasonably content as her condition allows.

The staff on the ward are all very dedicated and are committed to the care and welfare of their patients which they carry out efficiently and with great compassion. Their patients have varying degrees of psychiatric problems which causes many problems and difficulties for the staff.

We are extremely fortunate to have this small unit and its team of staff in Bronglais Hospital dedicated to the care of older patients, with psychiatric problems, otherwise people would have to travel considerable distances to another hospital which had a similar unit.

Unfortunately when a patient is discharged from the unit to go into full-time care there is no facility in Ceredigion where the patient can be accommodated. This means that the patient has to be accommodated in a care home in another county which creates more difficulties and concerns for the patient’s family.

With the increase in the number of dementia patients in the county of Ceredigion who now need full-time care isn’t it time for a facility to be set up in Ceredigion?

Bodlondeb in Penparcau could be an ideal location for this facility.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the staff on Enlli ward for the care and attention which they are giving my wife Sonia and all their other patients.

Yours etc,

David E Jenkins, Rhoshendre, Waunfawr, Aberystwyth.
