A book on an “eccentric” café in Borth-y-Gest will be launched next week.
The Bobbing Boats by Mary Howe will launch on Tuesday, 3 March at Trem y Don, 2 Ralph Street, Borth-y-Gest, after the weekly Clwb Coffi.
The book has been produced by Mary’s nephew, Richard Maldwyn, who edited his aunt’s notes on the café.
The café existed in the village from 1938 to the late 60s. It was run by sisters, Mary and Sarah Howe.
I am very conscious that she did not always get on well with the people of Borth y Gest. There are plenty of stories of times when she did little to endear herself to her neighbours.
“Despite that I think her heart was in the right place and many people held her in high regard. She has certainly had a lasting influence on her immediate family.”
The book will be available for £10 from Browsers Bookshop in Porthmadog and via the website www.delfrynpublications.co.uk.
See next week’s paper for an in-depth interview with the author in Maes, our music, art and entertainment section of the Cambrian News.
