NEW Quay Bowling Club has agreed to open its club car park for the use of members of the public during the winter months.

The move follows criticism of their decision to chain off the area in Francis Street, used by staff at the nearby primary school as well as parents dropping off their children.

Town mayoress Kirsty Jones, who said parents with young children were being forced to walk a quarter of a mile on roads with no pavements, described the bowling club’s actions in cordoning off the car park as “selfish”.

But club secretary Richard Iwanek has now revealed a rethink on their parking policy.

“The club executive management committee met on Monday, 11 September and decided to remove all the posts and chains at the end of September,” he told the Cambrian News.

“The car park will therefore be open to community use for the winter months.

“The club appreciates the problems of parents dropping off and collecting children in what is a narrow street with little or no paving.

“The club is not ‘anti-community’ and has demonstrated this by opening the car park in the off-season as the club has very little need of it during the winter months."
