YOU could have knocked Cardigan pugilist Ben Rees-Davies down with a feather when he bumped into British boxing legend Frank Bruno among the shelves of his local supermarket on Sunday.
Soldier Ben – a 26-year-old lance corporal in the Royal Welsh Regiment – had the shock of his life when he encountered the former World Boxing Council heavyweight champ in an aisle at Cardigan Tesco.
Their unexpected encounter came 23 years to the day since Bruno claimed a version of the world title by outpointing American Oliver McCall.
The 56-year-old later posted a video of himself apparently playing golf in nearby Gwbert.
A shell-shocked Ben tweeted: “Pleasure to meet @frankbrunoboxer in my local Tesco today in Cardigan, made my day! #LEGEND”
Ben, an elite member of the British Army’s boxing squad currently in training for next month’s Eindhoven Box Cup, said later: “Frank was a gent, as expected.
“I was just shocked, so I said: ‘Frank Bruno?’ And he turned and looked at me with a massive cheesy grin and we started chatting.
“I shook his hand and told him about myself boxing for the army and he wished me well and gave the team his best regards.
“He’s a legend in the sport – a massive bloke, too.
“His last words were: ‘Respect man, all the best’, but I didn’t get a selfie as my phone was in the car - I was gutted.”
