Madam,

I totally agree with Mohammad Tahla (‘Hedge cutting not helping songbirds’) in that crows, magpies and jays are devastating the smaller birds. They attack them and eat their eggs.

I love all wildlife and am developing a wildlife holiday destination but would gladly shoot – if allowed - the horrid magpies and crows which also cause hideous injury to newborn lambs, picking out their eyes and tongues.

My sister Gweneira had a brainwave that I implemented in my garden which at least allows them to feed safely.

I have placed a dog cage on a table and hung feeders inside it. This allows small birds to get through the bars but not the predators. It also prevents vermin being drawn to the food dropping as the tray inside the cage catches it all and the table overhang can’t be climbed over.

Last year I had 18 blackbirds and lots of songbirds in my garden but then the magpies and crows arrived in force and devastated them.

I recently saw just one blackbird and a small number of blue-tits, but since putting the dog cage out they are accumulating.

Yours etc,

Marilyn Jones, Aberystwyth
