Two brothers have raised nearly £14,000 for a burns charity by climbing Mount Everest from their home.

Harley Harvey, 5, was given a slim chance of survival following a caravan fire, in the early hours of Sunday 19 January 2020, in Ffair Rhos near Pontrhydfendigaid, which sadly killed his younger brother, Zac, 3, and hospitalised his father, Shaun.

Harley and his brother Alex, 10, have now raised an amazing £13,865 for the Welsh Dragon Burn Club in Swansea, who “provide ongoing care and services for children with burn injuries like Harley”.

On 8 May, Harley and Alex completed their charity challenge of climbing Mount Everest from home by climbing the stairs “whopping” 3,403 times, after beginning on 15 February.

Harley’s mother, Erin Harvey, said: “So the challenge was due to finish on 9 May, however this is Alex’s birthday so we are planning on the boys doing a few extra steps between now and then so we can finish a day early on the 8th.

“They are so far on track after having to catch up on the steps missed while Harley was in hospital.

“They’ve mostly enjoyed it. But days like today they have needed a little extra encouragement. So today I did the steps with Harley to get him going.

“It’s also much harder now they are in school too. But fair play to them, they are still going.

“I am absolutely blown away by the amount of donations the boys have received. It’s been so nice to spread positivity and cheer after the past year everyone’s had.

“It’s even more heartwarming that even with the struggles that this year’s brought, people have still supported the boys so much.

“It’s incredible. I’m beyond proud.”

On their decision to raise money for the Welsh Dragon Burn Club, Erin said: “The boys wanted to do something to raise money for one of the many great charities that have helped us along this journey since the fire.”

She added: “Harley has received amazing care in Morriston Hospital in Swansea which he will continue to receive through out his childhood.

“And once activities can return will be involved with this amazing charity and all of their activities and events.”
