A SIX-YEAR-OLD Pen Llyn schoolgirl is undergoing life-saving brain surgery to remove a tumour after a shock diagnosis last week.
And the parents of Ysgol Morfa Nefyn pupil Evie Hughes, Heather and Geraint Hughes, have thanked the community after they were “inundated” with messages of support and financial donations.
After a sharp-sighted teacher noticed something was amiss with Evie’s vision, her parents took her to the optician to see if she needed glasses.
But, to their horror, the optician informed the couple that their daughter was blind in one eye, which doctors later found was being caused by the effects of a brain tumour.
“Her teacher pointed out that one of her eyes was a little slower responding when she looked around. We hadn’t noticed,” Mrs Hughes told the Cambrian News this week.
“We went to see the opticians on Tuesday to see if she needed glasses. We were then told that she was completely blind in her left eye.
“They told us the eye is probably going to stay like that because the optic nerve has gone completely pale because of the tumour.
“The doctors told us the tumour has probably been there since she was born, but has been slow-growing.”
After a spell in Ysbyty Gwynedd, Evie was transferred to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, in Liverpool, on Friday, where she was scheduled to undergo surgery to remove the tumour today.
Despite the sudden change and the seriousness of the diagnosis, Mrs Hughes said Evie has been “so brave”.
“She is fine in herself at the moment.
“Then it is going to be a long road to recovery.
“We have explained it to her. She has been so brave and just shrugged it off.”
