Three youngsters from Ceredigion are featured in a special S4C programme honouring some of Wales’s bravest children and young people tonight.
Among those appearing will be 11-year-old Mia Lloyd, from Tremain; eight-year-old Trystan Beard, from Cilgerran; and Elin Gore, 12, from Comins Coch, near Aberystwyth.
The programme promises a unique insight into the lives of Mia, Trystan, Elin and other special individuals who have shown so much courage throughout their darkest days.
Mia, a pupil at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi, enjoyed running but in 2017, when out training with Carmarthen Harriers, felt a strange pain in her legs.
Following a visit to the doctor she received the news that she had osteosarcoma, a rare type of cancer.
She faced months of intense chemotherapy and in the end was forced to lose her leg.
Now despite her disability and months of distress and upset, Mia looks positively at the future.
“I always try to look at life in a positive way and although things have been difficult I am hopeful for the future,” she said.
“I want to try to help others too who have been in similar situations and so I am delighted now to be an ambassador for the Noah’s Ark Hospital Charity.”
Mia loves rugby and one of her heroes is Newcastle Emlyn’s Scarlets and Wales scrum-half Gareth Davies.
Therefore it was a bit of a shock to see Gareth come to collect her and take her for a game of golf at Cardigan – viewers can see what happened on Friday night.
Trystan suffers from cerebral palsy but, according to his mum Anwen, is facing his situation with courage.
“Trystan has been through a very difficult time but he always has a smile on his face,” she said.
“He was determined to walk me down the aisle on my wedding day without any support and so he practiced every day without fail even though he was very tired.
“Of course he succeeded and the sight of his face was one that I would treasure forever.”
Trystan is a huge football fan and in the programme you can see what happened when he met Cardiff City’s Callum Paterson.
Elin, a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Penweddig, had the difficult news while at primary school that her father had cancer.
From then on the family went through a hard time with her father spending long periods at hospital in Swansea.
But during this she was determined to turn their story and situation into a positive one and help others.
So she organised a Macmillan coffee morning to thank the nurses for their wonderful care, and succeeded in raising £2,442.
Her mother, Nia Gore, said: “Even though Elin was very young, she was extremely brave and a huge support for me and the rest of the family.”
At a special evening at Talybont Young Farmers’ Club, Elin had a real surprise as the Welsh Whisperer turned up in person to thank her for all her hard work.
Dathlu Dewrder – Tlws Plant is screened on S4C at 7.30pm tonight.
