I read with interest former Machynlleth mayor Gareth Jones’ letter and the town council’s replies and comments. I agree in part with most of what has been said, but far more dangerous to both motorists and pedestrians is the T-junction at the town clock and the lack of a pedestrian crossing on Pentrerhedyn Street by the chemist.
If the old bridge does one thing well, it slows, filters and calms traffic usually into smaller groups of flowing traffic.
So by endorsing Gareth’s letter are they admitting finally that we need a bypass for the town or are they condemning the town to gridlock like Newtown, Dolgellau and Welshpool pre-bypass era?
I would implore the town council to at least revisit the notion of a town bypass and start thinking outside the box.
