Madam,

Further to the letter from Pat Bates regarding the proposed renaming of the Second Severn Crossing, I feel I must correct a couple of points.

Pat says that: “The Welsh Assembly has decided on a new name” - that is completely incorrect, and is at the core of the problem!

The Assembly wasn’t even asked for an opinion. Alun Cairns decided on his own that it needed renaming and that it should be named after the ‘Prince of Wales’. He consulted exactly one person - Carwyn Jones.

Pat also suggests that the bridge not having a name is unusual. Again, I really don’t think so - most bridges in Wales have a geographical name - Pont Trefechan? Pont Menai? The Barmouth Viaduct? So Pont Newydd yr Hafren is just fine.

At the time of writing the renaming proposal seems to have the support of two people. The petition against it has over 37,000 names, and is still growing (see www.change.org). This whole farcical story is yet another example of the contempt in which the Westminster establishment holds the views of the people of Wales. We can do better than being ruled from Downing Street.

Yours etc,

Nigel Callaghan, Taliesin.
