Madam,

Many of us have taken direct action on climate change as individuals over the last 30 years and this has achieved very little.

During the same period we have seen large companies and corporations evade their responsibilities towards the environment. What we urgently need now is for governments to take radical action to both reduce carbon emissions to zero, and also to prepare society for the impacts of global warming which are already ‘locked in’.

To carry on with ‘business as usual’ is not an option if we want to avoid the extinction of many species on Earth, ourselves included.

Given the dire warnings currently being voiced by scientists and academics, we should give our wholehearted support to the young people who took part in school strikes on 15 March and beyond. It is their future that hangs in the balance.

Yours etc, Julie Makin Llwynygog, Llandre, Bow Street.
