QUESTION marks hang over the future of an old coaching inn which has been a renowned feature of Aberaeron for over 200 years.
The Feathers Royal Hotel opened in 1815 – the year of the Battle of Waterloo. For over two centuries it has been a focal point of the community with its large banqueting suite attracting a host of events.
But as it closes its doors tomorrow there are fears the closure will prove permanent, following the retirement of owners Lee and Richard Collier.
The Cambrian News understands that the hotel has been bought by a Cardiff property developer, and its staff of 18 have been placed at risk of redundancy.
Mayor Cllr Elizabeth Evans described it as ‘sad news’ for Aberaeron.
“I very much hope that the new owner will reopen the Feathers as a hotel,” she said. “It offers such a lot to the town – as well as its numerous beds that huge function room will obviously be a big loss.”
Although there are rumours that the hotel will reopen under new management by the end of the year, these have still not been confirmed this week.
A social media message read: “Whilst Lee and Richard are happy to announce their retirement this is also with sadness as we have to inform you that The Feathers Royal Hotel will be closing after a period of 203 years’ service to the local community.
"We would like to thank all our regular customers for their support over our 11 years here at The Feathers.
"The hotel will close for business on 19 July. Anyone holding Feathers Hotel gift vouchers please redeem them before this date.”
