Plans have been submitted to turn two high street shops in Aberystwyth into a licensed café.
UK chain Loungers Limited wants to set up a late-night café in the Burton Menswear and Dorothy Perkins premises in Great Darkgate Street.
Loungers was originally expected to join Pizza Express in the old Welsh school café quarter development near Aberystwyth’s railway station.
The news has angered Aberystwyth Town Council, which wants the Great Darkgate Street scheme rejected.
The council said Loungers should have stuck with the Yr Hen Ysgol Gymraeg development which is a “designated area and more suitable location for this business”.
“The noise generated by a late-night bar café in this area would contribute to an already disruptive atmosphere at the top of town, and would be especially detrimental to residents living in the area,” the council said.
Loungers said the café would enhance the provision of eating and drinking establishments in the town centre and would provide jobs.
