A MACHYNLLETH councillor has welcomed commitments from the Post Office about the future of banking services in Machynlleth.
Cllr Michael Williams said he was pleased with the outcome after a meeting was organised by Montgomeryshire AM Russell George between local councillors and a senior Post Office manager.
Barclays, which is the last bank still to have a branch in Machynlleth, is due to close in September, sparking concerns in the town about how Machynlleth residents will access banking services.
A range of banking services will be available at the town’s Post Office and Cllr Williams said he was hopeful that banking services would still be available in Machynlleth thanks to the Post Office.
He said: “I congratulate Russell George for organising the meeting and taking on board the concerns of local people with the impending closure of the last bank in Machynlleth.
“It was pleasing to hear from the Post Office representative of what they’re able to do and what they’ll be able to do if the services can be enhanced. It’s up to the banks themselves, though, to put in place arrangements to allow the Post Office to offer services over and above what the Post Office can currently offer.”
Following the meeting, Mr George said some areas of concern had been addressed with the Post Office, but it was important for Machynlleth residents to make use of the services available.
