A family-run caravan park in Devil’s Bridge has scooped a prestigious Loo of the Year title.
Woodlands Caravan Park has won platinum level for their high standard of facilities for several years running, but this year to their surprise they were announced the National Category Winner for the best holiday campsite washroom facilities in Wales.
The Woodlands was bought in 1962 by Bill Davies who died the following year. His son Peter and his wife Meryl developed the park into a successful business which is now run by their daughters, Victoria and Georgina, with the help of two seasonal staff and Victoria’s husband Alphie.
The team at Woodlands said this week: “We are thrilled to have won such a prestigious award; it’s such an achievement as we don’t have the amount of staff that other sites have and were entered in the same category as us.”
Every entry received an unannounced visit from the Loo of the Year Awards inspector and was assessed against 101 judging criteria – including signage and décor, fixtures and fittings and overall standards of cleanliness and management.
Every washroom receives a grading ranging from Bronze to Diamond and Gold, Platinum and Diamond winners are shortlisted for one or more of several National Awards covering England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.
The inspectors visited Woodlands at 7.30am and were greeted by Victoria who showed them around the facilities for them to judge.
The establishment has also claimed the Washroom Cleaner of the Year Award for providing a high level of commitment to a vital public service.
The Loo of the Year Awards and associated Washroom Cleaner of the Year Awards for cleaning staff have been identifying the best washrooms in Britain since 1987 and are recognised as standard setters for all those who provide ’away from home’ facilities for customers.
Throughout the summer of pandemic worries, when cleanliness was of upmost importance, the facilities were kept clean and safe for its customers using a regulated in and out system to prevent the building from becoming over crowded.
This system was remarked on by many customers over the summer and was described as a “safe and easy way to assess how many people were using the facilities at any one time”.
A large pebble was moved by foot to an ‘in box’ on the floor on entering the facilities, and then moved back to the ‘out box’ when the visitor left the building. With only 10 pebbles available, it meant that only 10 people would enter the building.
To add to these achievements, the Woodlands Caravan Park has been listed in the Top 100 Parks for the seventh year running.
