A Porthmadog charity shop has won a window dressing competition aimed at promoting Santes Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of love in the town.
St David’s Hospice’s shop in Porthmadog High Street decorated its windows to celebrate Santes Dwynwen’s Day.
Linda Smith, shop volunteer had interpreted an aspect of Santes Dwynwen’s story by knitting a three-dimensional image of a well full of writhing eels. Competition judge, Ann Catrin Evans commented that the skills and imagination behind the display had ensured that the prize should go to Saint David’s Hospice.
The annual competition was organised jointly by Hunaniaith, the Gwynedd based Welsh language promotion agency and Caru Port, the Porthmadog community action group.
Selwyn Griffiths, chair of Caru Port said: “Caru Port warmly congratulates Linda and the other voulnteers at St David’s Hospice for their enthusiasm and creativity”.
Highlighting the need for the competion Selwyn explained “we wanted to celebrate that Porthmadog is a town where Welsh is the language of the community; we also wanted to add a splash of colur to the town at a quiet time of year. What better way to do this than to celebrate an uniquely Welsh Saint and encourage our businesses to decorate their Windows with vibrant and imaginative displays of colour”.
