PORTHMADOG councillors are to meet with a Welsh Government minister to discuss the future of the town’s tax office.

In December, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) announced that it is to close all tax offices in Wales outside Cardiff, which includes Ty Moelwyn in Porthmadog, which would result in a loss of over 20 jobs.

Porthmadog Town Council has voiced its strong opposition to the closure and a campaign was set up to save the office.

A public meeting was recently organised by the town council to rally support for the campaign, which was attended by over 50 people including local councillors and community leaders from the Welsh Assembly and Westminster.

Members of Porthmadog Town Council, who are concerned there will be a detrimental effect on the Welsh language service offered, are to discuss their concerns with Alun Davies AM, minister for lifelong learning and the Welsh language.

Cllr Selwyn Griffiths, chair of the town council, said: “We sent a letter to the Welsh Assembly in July and we are pleased we are now able to meet Alun Davies in the near future to discuss our concerns.”
