There are fears for the pub trade in Aberystwyth, after one local will be closing its doors next month, another has shut “temporarily” and a brewery has announced 40 closures across Wales.
The Fountain Inn in Trefechan confirmed this week that it will close next month.
And the Vale of Rheidol, which only reopened after refurbishment in September, is currently shut.
A statement on the Vale’s Facebook page said: “It is with regret that I have had to close the pub. I want to say thank you to our loyal regulars, you made opening every day worth it. Unfortunately things occurred which were beyond my control.”
A spokesperson for Admiral Taverns said the Vale is “temporarily closed” and they are “working with the licensee” to have the pub reopened as soon as possible.
There are also fears over the future of more locals, after brewery SA Brains announced it will close 40 of its 153 pubs across Wales.
The company would not confirm which pubs will be affected. Brains pubs in the town centre include Lord Beechings, Court Royale and Scholars.
A spokesperson for Brains said it was still in consultation with the affected pubs so would not say which pubs could be closed.
The Fountain will close its doors for the final time on 4 April.
The Fountain’s Facebook page said: “As some of our customers are aware, we will be closing the doors to the Fountain on 4 April.
“The kitchen will close on 29 March.
“On behalf of Jen and myself we would like to thank you for your custom and invite you to come and have a drink with us on our last night.”
Leading Welsh brewery SA Brains announced last week it will close and look to sell 40 pubs across Wales.
A spokesperson for Brains said it was still in consultation with the affected pubs and staff members so would not release details of which pubs could be sold or closed.
The news is another blow in Aberystwyth after a string of businesses, including both local and chain stores, closed over the last few months, including Clinton Cards and Pandora.
