HM Revenue and Customs Welsh Language Service had a record-breaking year in 2019 translating over 1.5 million words.
They also answered over 20,000 calls in Welsh and are celebrating the achievement by highlighting the services they provide.
For more than 25 years, HMRC’s Welsh Language Service has been supporting the Welsh language needs of the department and its customers.
Today the team consists of 32 highly trained full-time staff, with the majority of services delivered by two dedicated teams based in Porthmadog and Cardiff.
The Welsh Language Customer Services team in Porthmadog delivers advice on a wide range of tax issues to customers who wish to communicate with HMRC in Welsh. The Welsh Language Unit, based in Cardiff, provides written translation services for HMRC and also co-ordinates all of its Welsh language requirements.
Lee Jones, head of Welsh Language Services for HMRC, said: “As well as our two main teams in Porthmadog and Cardiff we have Welsh speakers across HMRC who can help our customers. It’s so encouraging to see the Welsh language needs of the organisation and our customers increasing year on year.
“The number of words we translated in 2019 is 50 per cent more than ever before and we took a record number of calls.
“The range of our work is continually expanding and we’re extremely proud of the positive feedback we get from our customers for the services we provide.”
