STALLHOLDERS at Cardigan Market say building repairs being carried out by Ceredigion County Council are having a dire effect on their businesses.

Traders also claim there has been a lack of communication from Menter Aberteifi who manage the market and that as a result their numbers have dwindled.

“We were told back in December that scaffolding was going up and that it wouldn’t affect us in any shape or form,” book dealer Iwan Spencer, 26, told the Cambrian News.

“Now that it’s gone up, the area it covers is twice as big as we were led to believe and the effect twice as serious.

“Around 10 stallholders have already packed up and left and none of us have been offered any compensation or rent rebates.

“We have been told that the work will take five to six months and that basically we just have to deal with it.

“No wonder there’s only a handful of us left.”

Mr Spencer, who pays £109 rent per month, said the scaffolding was having “a massive effect” on his own stall.

“There are two massive poles smack-bang in the middle of my walkway,” he said. “At the back I’ve got another massive pole going diagonally across.”
