Aberystwyth Town Council is urging the county council to find a new location for the town’s award-winning Farmers’ Market, after a move saw it “fall flat on its face”.
Aberystwyth Farmers’ Market returned on 7 August this year, in the old Arriva bus depot, after a long hiatus due to Covid-19.
Ceredigion County Council said the move, from its original location on North Parade, was only a temporary one and the site would be reviewed in January.
In a meeting on Monday, 25 October, Aberystwyth town councillor Mair Benjamin said: “The market is held opposite my home, so I’ve been able to observe what’s going on there.
“It’s definitely not in the right position, even though the entrance has been made clear. I feel really bad for the store holders. "Considering it has won so many awards, to see the market fall on its face now, I feel sad.”
Cllr Mari Turner said: “I presume it’s a private space, but is there any potential for asking for the outdoor space by Yr Hen Ysgol Gymraeg to be a new site?”
It was agreed that the suggestion would be made to Ceredigion council.
A county council spokesperson said the site is “ideal” for the time being as it allows for social distancing.
The council has “consulted with the stall holders”, they said.
“Feedback on the location is mixed with some thinking it’s a good location, others preferring a town location. Evidence shows that the numbers of attendees have been increasing since its relocation, as people have adapted to the new location.”
