DOZENS of factory workers have lost their jobs just weeks before Christmas.

Luxury lodge building company Cambrian Sovereign has gone into liquidation, with more than 50 workers losing their jobs.

The Cambrian News reported in April that the Porthmadog company was struggling and that the company has taken the self-styled “bold step” to lay off 35 members of staff in a bid to “concentrate on production quality rather than quantity”.

Although adamant the lay-offs were only temporary, the company has now called in the liquidators to Cambrian and Sovereign Holding Group Ltd and Sovereign Park and Leisure Homes Ltd, with 51 further jobs lost.

Porthmadog councillor Selwyn Griffiths was devastated for the employees who faced uncertainty heading into the festive season.

“The closure of Cambrian Sovereign is a blow to our community here in Porthmadog with so many losing their work,” he told the Cambrian News.

“It is a blow for all those who have lost their employment and being so near to Christmas makes it worse.

“I sincerely hope the owner of the building will be able to get a new tenant very soon. It would be a great shame to see this iconic building empty for a long period.”
