DEVELOPERS behind plans to convert Aberystwyth’s Old Welsh School into a new ‘leisure quarter’ have announced they have agreed deals with national chains Pizza Express and Loungers.
The £3m plan, which has been approved by Ceredigion County Council, to convert the listed building provides premises for up to six different restaurants and retail units.
It has been revealed that terms have already been agreed with Pizza Express and bar/restaurant chain Loungers.
The development, which is expected to open in mid 2017, will see restaurants and retailers located in a courtyard, with a tree-lined walk-through from the train station to Park Avenue, opposite the Mill Street development.
Property agents Cooke & Arkwright, who have been appointed to let the units and offer advice on potential tenants, have said that, after securing agreements with the two national chains, they are working on finding other tenants.
Director Huw Thomas said: “Aberystwyth is a lively coastal university town and a popular tourist destination. The aim is for Yr Hen Ysgol Gymraeg to become Aberystwyth’s leisure destination for both the local community and seasonal visitors.
“We’re delighted to have secured terms with both Pizza Express and Loungers and we are now looking to seek interest from other suitable occupiers, with the aim for the development to open in mid 2017.”
