CAMPAIGNERS battling to save Aberystwyth’s historic Post Office building have threatened to boycott the town’s WH Smith branch – which is where the company is most likely to enter into a franchise agreement to house the post office branch.
The Save Aberystwyth Post Office Campaign, whose members held a demonstration through the streets of Aberystwyth last month, have called on the Post Office to change its mind on the threat to close the existing Post Office building on Great Darkgate Street.
Campaigners have written to the CEOs of WH Smith, Tesco, Spar and the Co-op “threatening to disrupt their retail operations until they make a public commitment not to be a Post Office Ltd franchise partner in the town”.
Both Tesco and Co-op have ruled out entering into a franchise agreement, but no reply was received from WH Smith or Spar.
Campaigners are now planning on building local support for a boycott of the two remaining retailers – Spar and WH Smith – who, they say, had a deadline of Saturday to declare their lack of interest in a franchise of the Post Office.
A spokesperson for the Save Aberystwyth Post Office Campaign said: “The proposed franchise of Aberystwyth Crown Office takes place in the context of the closure of 24 Post Office branches in Wales since 2014."
The Post Office is “currently talking to interested partners”. The company said a six-week consultation will begin once firm plans are in place.
