DEVELOPERS behind a £5m scheme to turn a prominent Aberystwyth building made famous by Hinterland into a spa hotel and apartments say up to 75 jobs could be created.
Hawkstone Ltd want to renovate and convert Swyddfa’r Sir, which has been seen across the globe as the police station in the hit TV show Hinterland, into a 31-bed hotel with a swimming pool and spa, as well as 20 flats and 19 studio apartments.
The plans have now been approved by Ceredigion planners, subject to conditions.
Documents lodged as part of the application have said the development could see up to 75 jobs created.
The building, which was until recently used as council offices and magistrate courts, has been left empty since 2012 after the opening of the new court at Aberystwyth Marina. Council staff left the building when the council’s office in Llanbadarn Fawr opened in 2009.
Estimates are that the refurbishment work of Swyddfa’r Sir would cost around £5m, with the building said to be in a “severe state of disrepair”.
Speaking of the plans, Cllr Mark Strong, whose ward covers the promenade, welcomed the news and urged the developers to “get on and do it”.
