AN Aberystwyth company has sponsored a Welsh teacher’s trip of a lifetime teaching in Patagonia.

Teithiau Tango, a tour operator based in Aberystwyth, has sponsored a range of projects in Welsh communities in Argentina and has previously helped teachers from Wales travel to the region to keep the Welsh language alive.

Mirain Dafydd, who is originally from north Wales, but was brought up in Cardiff, has taught in schools in Cardiff, China and Vietnam, and was appointed to Ysgol Gymraeg y Gaiman in Patagonia, before returning to Wales in December.

Aled Rees, of Teithiau Tango, said the company was keen to support Welsh-speaking communities in Patagonia and helping teachers work in the area was a great way of doing so.

He said: “If it wasn’t for the schools in the Welsh communities in Patagonia, the language and culture would almost certainly die out. As a proud Welsh company we are committed to doing everything we can to help these areas. When we heard about Mirain’s trip, we jumped at the chance to contribute to such a worthy case.

Mirain added: “I am very lucky to have had such a unique experience, thanks to the sponsors. We have also been lucky here with workshops and sessions by Welsh musician Tecwyn Ifan and Rhiannon during their first visit to Welsh Patagonia.

“It was an unforgettable experience for the Gaiman residents as well as us, the Welsh teachers.

“It’s a privilege to work with the children, and we have many exciting projects ahead in our classes this term.”
