LLOYDS Bank - the last permanent bank in town - is to close has sparked considerable concerns.

A spokesman for Lloyds Bank revealed on Friday that the Tregaron branch – thought to date back to the 1880s – would close its doors for the last time in March.

The bank, which in recent years has only been open two days a week, has said that all customer accounts will be moved to Lampeter - over 10 miles away.

It has been confirmed that a mobile branch service will be provided in Tregaron, although no route or timetable have yet been confirmed.

AM Elin Jones described the announcement as “a big disappointment” for Tregaron.

“I’m glad that the bank has acknowledged that there is sufficient need for a mobile bank, but this will never be able to replace the service provided by a full branch,” she said.

“I will write to the area manager and make representations on behalf of Tregaron, and urge that there needs to be clear communication with their customers on this issue.

Tregaron is among 10 branches across Wales earmarked for closure next spring.

Lloyds cited the “changing ways” customers do their banking, saying more now use internet or telephone services.
