Traders will return to the promenade in Aberystwyth this summer after a successful trial last year.
Ceredigion County Council has decided to invite traders to apply for licenses to sell food and beverages on the promenade this summer, after a successful pilot trial from July to October 2019.
During the pilot trial, six spaces were made available on the promenade; two spaces for mobile kiosks and four larger spaces for existing businesses, on the other side of the road, to set up seating areas.
A spokesperson for Ceredigion council said: “Following a trial a public survey was published to seek the opinions from traders and promenade users and a large number of responses were received which were largely supportive of continuing.
“Further trials are considered appropriate until proposed sea defence works are developed and implemented.”
The council is inviting people to apply for a tender document, which will be available from Monday, 2 March to be returned by 16 March.
Jonathan Foligno, one of the traders who took part in the 2019 trial, has expressed his delight that the 2020 trial will take place for a longer period, from April to November.
Jonathan, who is the owner of the Express Fish and Chip shop, said: “I’ve spoken to some of the other traders who had been on the prom and we’re really happy they have listened to our comments about wanting a long term, because last year the weather wasn’t great.
“It’s fully weather permitting trade, so we were really encouraged by that.”
However, as traders haven’t seen the tender document yet, Mr Foligno said he is still unsure of the future of promenade trading.
Cllr Ceredig Davies said: “Last year’s trial of expanding the food offer along Aberystwyth’s promenade was deemed a success and as a consequence I welcome the opportunity for traders to once again tender for a pitch along the seafront.
“Now all we need is a glorious summer with hundreds of people on the promenade enjoying what Aberystwyth has to offer.”
Ceredigion council is encouraging anyone interested in submitting a tender to contact the council on 01545 572070 and request a tender pack.
