A PORTHMADOG artist who set about recreating an iconic feature of the town in January 2020 has told the Cambrian News said his work is “nearly complete”.

Carwyn Jones has built a new version of a model ship to sit above the doorway of the Ship Inn in Porthmadog.

He received several requests from locals, including the landlady of the pub, to carry out the work.

The Ship Inn has had a model of the ship, the Evelyn, above its door for over 80 years, with the first model being put into place in 1938.

Carwyn said: “The ship is nearly complete.

“I’m waiting on some local joiners to get back to me with ideas on how to safely fix the ship to the roof of the pub.

“Lockdown has had a huge impact not only on the building of the ship but also on the pub itself.

“I work for the NHS, so it’s been pretty hectic here.”

Recalling what stage he was at with the ship when the country first went into lockdown in March, Carwyn said: “From what I can remember the hull was completed and painted.

“The spars and masts were welded and fixed.

“But lockdown for the Ship Inn was far worse than for myself. I just carried on working as usual.”

The launching of the model ship above the door of its new home will be delayed, Carwyn said, until the pub can re-open.
