A GROUP of Ysgol Penweddig sixth-formers who set up a business from scratch with only £10 have won the top award in a national competition.
Four business students, Rhys Hughes, Hannah Bailey, Mairead Jones and Elin Davies started a business called The Bee’s Knees, which sold candles and lip balm made from natural beeswax sourced from a bee farm in Trefenter.
And the group are now preparing to travel down to the Bank of England, London, on 2 May, to collect their award after winning ‘Best Group’ in the 15-19 age category of the national secondary schools entrepreneurial competition, The Tenner Challenge UK.
The annual competition challenges students to develop a successful business with only £10.
Speaking to the Cambrian News, business and enterprise leader at Ysgol Penweddig, Jane Richards, expressed her pride at her pupils’ achievements.
“I am very proud of The Bee’s Knees. They worked extremely hard to get a business up and running in such a short space of time,” said Mrs Richards.
“They have shown excellent entrepreneurial skills which I am sure they will utilise in the future.
“They — and I — are very excited to have been invited to London for the award ceremony where they will receive their award for ‘Best Group’.
“They are all now revising thoroughly for their upcoming AS exams, but I am sure we will see more from The Bee’s Knees in the future. I am a very proud teacher.”
