A CARING café owner is offering free Christmas lunches to anyone on their own this year.

Bernadette Brown, who runs The LunchBox café in Barmouth, is opening her business on Christmas Day and offering free turkey dinners with all the trimmings to those who have no-one to share their day with.

Bernadette started the thoughtful scheme last year and said it proved popular.

“One man cycled across from Fairbourne for it. It was his first Christmas dinner in 10 years since his wife died,” the café owner said.

“It was worth opening just for him really.

“Me and my daughter Carrie decided to do it before Christmas last year. I’m from a big family – I’ve got eight grandkids – so I just can’t imagine feeling all alone on Christmas Day. We wanted to do something.

“We have a couple of customers here who have lost their partners and so come in for a meal and a bit of company, so we thought of doing it just for them.

“Then we reconsidered and said that anybody is welcome. It was a lovely day last year.

“The local community has been great. We’ve had people donating food, money and wine to help out.”
