A Llanbadarn councillor is calling on McDonald’s to do more to tackle the issue of littering in the Aberystwyth area.
Llanbadarn Cllr Woolfall-Jones told the Cambrian News that many residents in his ward, and from further afield, have commented on the amount of used McDonald’s packaging littering the area.
He said: “You don’t have to travel far to see McDonald’s rubbish in Llanbadarn or along the roads in Ceredigion.
“It’s something that needs to be addressed, and I’ve asked McDonald’s to take a lead on this.”
Cllr Woolfall-Jones has written to McDonald’s to ask whether they have considered “printing the registration of cars that order items from the drive-thru onto packaging”.
He added: “Ideally, this would be on all items – bags, cups, wrappers, burger boxes and French-fry packaging.”
As a former McDonald’s employee himself, Cllr Woolfall-Jones is encouraging the fast-food chain to trial his idea in their Aberystwyth restaurant.
“Since then, McDonald’s has become more and more automated. People can order on screens, or via their phones," he said.
“They also print stickers in the store for personalised meals, or to differentiate between similar packaging.
“I’m asking them to consider investing in matching up these gaps in their technology, to help improve the environment and to disincentives people from simply dropping their waste out of car windows.
“I envisage that this would work with a technology that scans the plate when customers first enter the drive-thru, and then either stamp it onto food packaging and bags or stick on a label.”
McDonald’s has been asked to comment but no response has yet been received.
