CONCERNS have been raised about cars travelling at high speed outside a college.
Pleas have been made to reduce the speed limit to 20mph outside Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor in Dolgellau to ease “anxieties” that an accident will take place.
The matter was raised by Cllr John Cadwaladr at December’s town council meeting after discussing it with college representatives.
“The college has put in an application to bring down the speed limit,” he said.
“It’s a dangerous strip of road and there are true concerns - anxiety really - that an accident will happen.
“They have asked that the town council support the proposal, especially for the college and for the schools in the area.”
Dolgellau county councillor Dyfrig Siencyn was sympathetic with the cause but felt that nothing much could be done.
“I’ll follow it up but we’ve been here before and we’ve been told we couldn’t have 20mph,” he said.
Cllr Bob Gunton agreed. “When we’ve had the council out before they’ve been quite negatives about 20mph zones.
“Their base theory of speed limits is ‘if it looks like a 30mph road, people will drive at 30’, same for all other road speeds.
“It’s certainly worth pursuing though, we’ll need something in place to ascertain the speed of traffic.”
